What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: I am 48, female, and on Cymbalta (120) and Propranolol (60) daily. I have also been on a very low carb diet for a month. My labs have always been normal but last week they were drawn and my AST is 48, ALT 40, MCV 104, MCH 34.2. To be honest, I had a big emotional shock about a month ago and have quite a lot of wine in that time. If I stop the alcohol and drink lots of water, can I get my levels normal again? Any idea how long that might take?

Brief Answer:
Yes, your liver enzymes will return to their normal level. Check the detail

Detailed Answer:
Hi!
Thanks for posting your query.
I appreciate your concern for the raised liver enzymes and the expected time of recovery upon discontinuing alcohol.

The liver enzyme AST is slightly raised (Normal: 10-40 Units/L) while the ALT is within the normal range (7-56 Units/L).

To be more liver test like GGT is more specific for the alcohol related liver injury or disease.

The other blood tests like MCV and MCH are slightly raised and are indicative of mild anemia.

Usually, the alcohol induced liver injury starts to resolve within a few days to a week of stopping alcohol however, improvement starts within a week or two of stopping therapy, and the injury resolves completely within 2 to 3 months.

So, if you start taking foods rich in anti oxidants and Vitamin E, the chances of recovery will be very high. The foods rich in anti oxidants include fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables will not only hasten the recovery from the injury but also useful in treating the anemia as well.

Hope this answers your query.

Wishing you a very quick and smooth recovery.

Forgot to mention that I was also on the hCG diet - taking the real hormone, prescribed by doctor - and following a very strict no/low carb diet for 3-1/2 weeks prior to testing. Could that also have affected my results?

Brief Answer:
hCG diet has no influence on the liver enzymes

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back to HCM.

Presuming that you had hCG diet to reduce your body weight, obesity itself predisposes to a fatty liver and mild elevation in liver enzymes.

However, there is no medical proof that hCG can have an influence over the raised liver enzymes. In fact, the weight loss that's too rapid may be harmful to your liver.
Hope this answers your query.
Regards.
