What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Mar 2017
Question: Received MRI report of lumbar spine due to back pain. I specifically have issues around L4-5. I have mild multilevel degenerative disc disease. I am a 55 year old female. I also have a life long history of scoliosis. I'm specifically interested in the area of my MRI report that says the following:
L4-5: There is normal vertebral body alignment. There is mild heterogeneous marrow signal without evidence of acute marrow edema or fracture. Posterior disc bulge measuring 3.8mm towards the right neural foramina. Mild facet hypertrophy. No centeral canal narrowing.

Impression: 1) Mild multilevel spondylosis without evidence of central canal stenosis. This appears similar to prior exam.
2) Neural foraminal narrowing at L4-5.

Previous lumbar mir's never discussed the marrow so I'm curious what that means. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
These are expected findings in your age.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for writing to HCM,
I've gone through your query and understand your concern,

Your findings may suggests age related degenerative changes in spine.
These are expected findings in your age.

Mentioning heterogeneous bone marrow is not a very serious finding. It is generally not a serious finding. Heterogeneous marrow in your age may be due to age related replacement from red to yellow.
It is good there is no bone marrow edema etc.

Other findings are not severe.Your findings may be managed conservatively.
You may need physiotherapy for strengthening back muscles.

Get well soon.

Hope I have answered your query.
Further queries are most welcome.

Take Care
