What Does Grade 2 Placenta During Pregnancy Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Jun 2014
Question: I am almost 23 weeks pregnant (22w6d), and I just had my congenital anomaly scan. Most everything looks good, but on the report the doc noted that the placenta was grade 2. It was grade 1 a couple of weeks ago. She didn't seem concerned today, but isn't this a bit early for that?
As a follow-up, I have attached the results of the US. The doctor said that the baby's weight was low, yet charts that I see seem to indicate that around 1 lb is right for this time (which is the baby's weight). Is there an accepted range for weight at this age?

Brief Answer:
low baby weight but normal Doppler

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.

After studying your detailed ultrasound report the good point is that there is no evidence of any congenital abnormality.
Usual weight around 20 weeks normogram is one pound but you are about 3 weeks ahead of that gestation so there is an element growth retardation.
To see for degree of growth retardation fetal Doppler is an important tool which is normal in your case.
GIST - Slow rate of growth (less weight on ultrasound) but still in compensated state (normal Doppler)
The disturbing fact is the grade 2 maturity which is a little early than its expected appearance (usually around 28-30 weeks) so you need regular monitoring of growth parameters and Doppler study to see for well being of the fetus.
Mothers with SLE have higher incidence of growth retardation of fetus and also hypertension in pregnancy so keep visiting your doctor for regular antenatal check ups.
I wish you the best of health and may god bless you with a healthy baby soon.

Thanks for your comments. I forgot to mention that this baby is half Caucasian and half Asian, so could that account for a somewhat lower weight?

Brief Answer:
possible but not the only factor responsible

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back to health care magic.
Definitely the baby weight characteristics are dependent on racial backgrounds but since you already have risk factors in the form of
- SLE and
- grade 2 maturity of placenta
we should get alarmed by slightest deviation from normal so that the problem if any can be dealt there and then.
I hope I have answered your query but in case you have other questions I will be happy to help.
