What Does Elevated ALT Level Indicate?
Question: My ALT is 48 and the range is supposed to be 5-33; my ast is 37 and the range is listed as less than 32.
I injured my back last december, and have been taking tylenol ever since. My dr. said ad long as i stayed under 3000 mg per day i was fine. I hesitate to take ibuprofen or other nsaids, as i was in the hospital for 5 days in march with low sodium. My numbers were all over the place especially those for kidney function. They thought the ibuprofen i was also taking at the time had caused this and said to be careful about any nsaids.
So should i be concerned about my alt and ast?

You have mildly raised ALT and AST. Increased ALT indicates liver damage.
Most likely,mildly raised ALT is due to tylenol intake.
Tylenol contains Acetaminophen and it may cause liver toxicity.
Your findings are acceptable.It is not too much raised. However,you need regular follow up for ALT and need clinical correlation.
AST is non specific and it is not serious.It is raised in many conditions.
Ideally,Ultrasound of liver should be done to find out any concomitant causes of liver damage.
Routine investigations should also be done.Renal function test should also be done.

Can I still take Tylenol in low dosage?
I have cut back to two regular Tylenol once per day
Kidney function was normal
Cholesterol readings borderline; triglycerides 299
All other tests normal
I see dr in two weeks
I am concerned about this
Can I take Tylenol in low dose? I am just taking two result strength Tylenol once a day (total 650 mg a day)
My LDL is 120, hdl is 58, total cholesterol 236, triglyceride 291.
Glucose, bun, creatine, gfr, electrolytes, and CBC all normal.
I am concerned and cannot get into the dr until sept.

You may need medicines to lower increased lipid level.
I suggest my patients to take tablet atorvastain 10 mg and fenofibrate 160 mg at night after dinner.
You also need lifestyle and diet changes.
You should avoid fat and fried food.
Avoid red meat and high fat milk products.
You should also increase your physical activity.
