Posted on Fri, 10 Apr 2015
Question: OK so I am 7 months post partum. This was my 2 child. I am 27 I have been taking adderall for 6 years. I stopped taking it while I was pregnant. I started taking it again again 8 weeks post partum after I got the OK from both Dr. My ob and my mental health Dr. For 3 months I had abnormal bleeding. I figured it was just my body getting used of the birth controle again. (orthotrycyclin lo) Finally everything was normal again. Then all of a sudden I started bleeding during intercourse alot and it's bright red. It happen 3 times and I finally saw my Ob they ordered and ultra sound but it was not for a month. So while I waited I did not take anything but my birth controle. I waited like 2 weeks and had intercourse and there was no bleeding this was 3 times in the span of 2 weeks no bleeding during intercourse. So I went for my ultra sound apt and the Dr. Did not see anything. I had also told him that the bleeding had stopped left the office with clean XXXXXXX of health. Well Monday I started taking my adderall again 20 mg time release 1 a day at 8 am everyday this week. Last night I had intercourse and started bleeding. Could it be the adderall making me bleed? If not what could it be? I also did make and apt with my ob it in 4 weeks thats the earliest I could get.

Brief Answer:
Pap smear is necessary, and colposcopy is required.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
I think it is just coincidence that you restarted Adderall and had post coital bleed again.
Adderall cannot lead to post coital bleeding.
The earlier irregular bleeding could be because of birth control, but even birth control cannot directly cause bleeding post intercourse.
Also, an ultrasound scan cannot pick up common causes of post coital bleeding.
THe common ones are - a cervical lesion ( infection, erosion, ectropion or other lesion ), cervical polyp, foreign body, endometrial polyp etc.
For diagnosis of these conditions it is essential to have an internal exam, a Pap smear and if the clinician finds anything more suspicious, then a colposcopic evaluation is required.
Please get this done.
All the best

He did exam me with a speculum. He did not do a pap smear because I recently had one in August of 2014 and it was normal.

Brief Answer:
Then ask your primary care provider to do a pap

Detailed Answer:
That is strange.
ANything requiring a Pap smear mostly shows up on per speculum exam.
If it is faster, you can ask your primary care provider to perform a Pap smear.
