What Does Black Holes Just Above Hip Area In X Ray Indicate?

Question: Hello Dr. Siegel. Two months ago, I was at my sink, sneezed and felt something in my back. I took a step and could barely move it was so painful. I went to the emergency room, received seven painkillers, which did nothing to ease the pain and caused me to vomit in conjunction with the pain. The ER did an assessment, which didn't indicate broken bones or nerve damage.

Two weeks later and still in pain, I went to a chiropractor who said that I probably had compressed discs and the sneeze knocked them out of alignment. He adjusted me and I noticed a difference immediately. I progress nicely for the next two weeks. Three weeks ago, I had to travel to XXXXXXX It was a stressful trip. While there and since then, my back has been fine but my right hip slips out of place causing terrible pain on my right hip and outer upper thigh. It hurts to lift my right leg and sleeping in any position is painful. It also hurts to turn my body to the right. An adjustment always makes me feel better but then the hip eventually slips again. I had an xray today, and it looks like black holes right above the hip bone area. What could this be? Will continual adjustments and massages eventually result in a once again healthy hip? Have always been an athlete (runner) and healthy. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
No. It will only give a short term relief.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The black holes just above the hip bone are difficult to guess without looking at the X-ray images. The recurrent slipping of the hip joint can be due to a torn ligament or labrum. This needs an MRI scan for proper diagnosis.
Regular adjustments and massages will help you in giving only a short term relief. For prolonged relief you need to consult an orthopedician and go for the proper investigations to find out the cause.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you, Dr. Tayal. I will get an MRI as you suggested.

If it is torn ligament or labrum that is causing the hip joint to slip, is there something that can be done to treat it or just rest until it is healed? If the latter, how long does that generally take?

I did get 11 hours of sleep last night and feel much better today.

Brief Answer:
Small tears do heal with rest.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The treatment of torn ligament depends on the site and extent of the tear. Minor tears usually heal with conservative treatment- rest for 6-8 weeks.
In case the tear is a full thickness tear then a surgical repair by arthroscopy may be needed.
Hope my answer is helpful.
