Brief Answer:
possible developing folliculitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to HCM,
If the pain is localized to your left nipple per se and there has been no radiation and the pain is more superficial over the skin and the subcutaneous tissue and not in the ribs below then it is likely that the cause is local. The possibilities can be a developing folliculitis due to periareolar follicular developing infection or possible insect bite or for that matter a local abrasion injury.
It is suggested that you may take an NSAID presently and watch for next 24 hrs for any development of redness or swelling. It is important to observe the same for any development of any lesion thereby. If the pain doesn't subside by then and redness ensues then you should be reporting to a physician for a local examination.
Regards

Detailed Answer:
hello,
The development of redness and a line towards the armpit indicates a local infection and extension of infection along the milk line and spread to the draining axillary lymph nodes. The ideal form of treatment at present would still be NSAID and hot fomentation as this would allow the body to fight the infection naturally and the lymph nodes to attack the allergen with antibodies and curtail the spread further. The decrease in pain is a sign that infection is hereby reducing and the infection is quadruped and you may not need an antibiotic . Just watch for pain and further increase in redness for another 24 hrs with NSAID AND hot fomentation. Regards
