Brief Answer:
Calcitonin

Detailed Answer:
Calcitonin is a blood test that can be sometimes used to give an idea as to the nature of origin of thyroid nodules. In the context of what you are asking, rarely thyroid lumps are due to a condition called MTC ie Medullary Thyroid Cancer. Sometimes, doctors check blood levels of calcitonin to screen for this possibility.

However, calcitonin rises in other situations too. Stress, such as infection, can elevate it as well.
