What Does A SGOT Level Of 133 Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: I'm 42, no medication, I exercise, no smoking or alcohol, I eat fairly well (of course I could do better) Almost no red meat, I do snack on chips and things at work, but not to excess.

My SGOT (AST) came in at 133 when the "normal range" was 12-42 U/L. My SGPT (ALT) came in at 49 with a "normal" range of 9-58 U/L, my Gamma Glutamyltransferase was 18 with a "normal range" of 10-101 U/L.
and my Total Bilirubin came in at 0.58 with a "normal range" of 0.10-1.20 mg/dL.

Does my SGOT (AST) seem like a mistake? It is so far off the range, and extremely high. Did the lab make a mistake. I have energy, no loss of appetite or vomiting, no appearance of bruising or Jaundice. It just seems like such an outlier that it has to be wrong.

Brief Answer:
SGOT is slightly elevated which does not have clinical significance.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

First of all, I would clearly say your SGOT (133) is slightly high and not extremely high as you feel.

Serum SGOT (and also SGPT) are highly sensitive liver function tests as they may get elevated easily by unhealthy life style or poor eating habits or following fatty meal or even mild alcohol intake. So I would not be personally worried about this finding as a treating physician. Yet, I would be keen to monitor the level. Hence it is advisable to repeat liver enzymes on a fasting sample say after a week or two.

I don't think this was a mistake by laboratory because your other liver function tests (SGPT, GGT and billirubin) are within normal range. And it is not uncommon to find single elevated enzyme.

So, considering your healthy life style with no alcohol/smoking and all other liver functions normal, I do not think there is anything to be worried here. However as I mentioned earlier you can repeat the SGOT on fasting blood sample to be in a safer side.

Hope this will help.
