What Do My Lab Test Reports Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 23 Oct 2017
Question: Hello doctor,

I had asked you few questions last week. If you remember they were questions about Fibroids, Morning sickness, scan, baby feel etc. Sorry that question is now closed so I need to write another question.

I had said that at 21+2 days anomaly scan all readings were within the range. But since this is our first successful pregnancy after three failed one, we were searching internet for comparisons and we are not satisfied by the different information.

Could you please give us knowledge on the followings:

Scan done at 21+2 weeks

1> Baby's Biparietal Diameter (BPD) reading was 49.7mm. some online report shows it comes at 36 percentile. What is this percentile? Is our baby growth normal at this stage?

2> Head Circumference (HC) reading was 182.5mm. Is this normal?

3> Femur Lenght (FL) reading was 36.8. Is this normal?

4> Estimated Fetal weight was 398 grams. Is this normal?

Please give your honest and experienced opinion about our baby's growth readings.

Do you think we should scan more regularly?

5> Also, what kind of diet you suggest to eliminate any risks? and what you suggest to avoid eating during this time?

Thanks for your time.

Regards.
Sorry, forgot to put other readings:

6> Abdominal circumference (AC) was 154.9mm.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Hello user,Do not worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello user

Standard Measurement.
For 23 weeks BPD is 57mm{plus minus 5}.HC is 210mm{plus minus 20mm}.Fl is 43mm{plus minus 5mm}.Ac is 186mm{plus minus 20mm}.

Your scan has mild deviation from standard but it can be measurement error also or according to 23 weeks your baby measurements are little less. But nothing to worry now.DO Scan at 30 to 32 weeks for better assessment.

Average weight at 23 week is around 500 to 600 gm but not to worry much.Have healthy diet 2 hourly.Growth will pick up.You can attach your complete report in this site.

Thanks.
You can ask if any further query.

Hello Doctor,

Thank you very for your reply. Much appreciate it.

I think there is some misunderstanding. Scan was done at 21+2 means at 21 weeks and 2 days. It was NOT done at 23 weeks.

Considering the readings at 21 weeks at 2 days, please let me know if the below falls under normal category or small fetal category:

Scan readings at 21 weeks 2 days:

1> Baby's Biparietal Diameter (BPD) reading was 49.7mm. some online report shows it comes at 36 percentile. What is this percentile? Is our baby growth normal at this stage?

2> Head Circumference (HC) reading was 182.5mm. Is this normal?

3> Femur Lenght (FL) reading was 36.8mm. Is this normal?

4> Estimated Fetal weight was 398 grams. Is this normal?

6> Abdominal circumference (AC) was 154.9mm. Is this normal?

7> If our baby falls under small category, do you suggest any specific diet to improve the growth?

I am sorry to write lengthy description but as you can understand that this is our first successful pregnancy after three early loses.

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Thank you very much doctor. This has eased our concerns.

Before we come up with any more question at later weeks, could you please tell us the following:

My wife is taking Levothyroxine for Hypothyroidism. Normally hospitals here do not give 36 weeks scan but they have booked for my wife 36 weeks scan.

- Why they need to scan at 36 weeks?

- She was offered because she has Hypothyroidism. How this thyroid can affect the baby or pregnancy?

- What special thing they have to check at 36 weeks?

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Hello user,Do not worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello user.

Hypothyroidism can cause a developmental delay in children after birth.
Your doctor wants to check weather the growth of the baby is appropriate for 36 week gestation and weather other parameters like amniotic fluid is okay.
