What Do AST Level Of 87 And ALT Level Of 84 Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Nov 2016
Question: My recent ast was 87 and alt 84. We just got back from vacation in XXXXXXX where I drank more than usual, but not crazy. My health is otherwise excellent, bmi 21, good bp, low ldl and triglycerides, high hdl, etc. Never had an issue before. However, 4 first cousins w hemochromatosis ( one died of liver failure, one bile duct carcinoma - both drinkers) How bad is this? Going for blood work again next week to test all the liver concerns.

Brief Answer:
It is not very bad but liver is definitely affected

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Thank you for posting your question on Health Care Magic.
Your liver functions are definitely elevated but not too bad
If you are only a teetotaller this wouldn't have happened, as you mentioned the amount of alcohol has definitely crossed the safety limits.
If there are no other symptoms like fever or jaundice then infection is ruled out.
Haemochromatosis definitely runs in families, but usually occurs due to repeated blood transfusions
Please get your liver function tests done completely with Ultrasound of the abdomen to visualise the structure of the liver.
I would also recommend serum iron level and total iron binding capacity.
Please revert back with reports
Mean while keep away from alcohol completely.
Best wishes
