What Could Cause A Throbbing Pulse On Neck?

default
Posted on Sat, 13 Sep 2014
Question: I've had a throbbing pulse in the center (hollow) of my neck, and its gone on for months now. It's nearly constant, and it feels at times like someone has their fingers wrapped around my throat tightly. A few months ago, my doctor tested my blood for thyroid problems, and all came back normal. She said it didn't appear to be life threatening, and just let her know if it continued. It's getting worse. I feel like my airway is closing off during the night, depending on how I lie.

Brief Answer:
Discuss with doctor about side effects of Evamist.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Apart thyroid problems, other factors can cause the throbbing pulse in the center of your neck:
- menopause: hormonal changes during menopause are associated with suffocating symptoms and hot flushes. You are already taking Evamist, the use of which might be a cause to your problems
- carotic atherosclerosis: as you are reporting to be taking Simvastatin (a cholesterol lowering drug); atherosclerosic plaques of carotics (places on the neck) should be ruled out through Doppler ultrasound. Furthermore, the use of Evamist is associated with arterial emboli that should be further checked.
- upper GI problems: GERD/reflux for which you are taking Dexilant (a PPIs)
- esophageal issues

Until the tests results are in, I advise to:
- eat often, small portions and slowly
- sleep with 2 pillows (try to raise your head up from shoulders)
- follow a healthy lifestyle and diet regimen
- get further consultation with the doctor who advised Evamist and revise with him/her about the side effects are mentioned earlier.

All the best!
