What Causes Withdrawal Bleeding After Taking Primolut-N?

Posted on Thu, 14 Jul 2016
Question: Hi There
I was prescribed two weeks of primolut as my periods were going on way too long (2 weeks)
I finished the course on Monday and my period was due this week
I started bleeding yesterday, is this a 'withdrawal' bleed or would it be my actual period? I'm wondering as we are trying to conceive and I need to track my ovulation this cycle

Brief Answer:
Withdrawal bleeding is more likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

This is more likely to be a withdrawal bleeding and since your doctor has prescribed the medication such that it correlates with the onset of your next period, you can take this as your next cycle.

The duration of bleeding should lessen in this cycle. You can track ovulation status. Recording of basal body temperature, if done properly, is the best way out when compared to ovulation tests using kits.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

Brief Answer:
Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

You can take this as your period and start testing for ovulation. Your chances of ovulation in this cycle may be lower since you had the hormones for induction. You can also go for the BBT measurement.

Hope this helps. Please get back if you need any more suggestions.

Hi There
I had an ultrasound before taking the tablets which showed I was ovulating.
My OB didn't mention I may not ovulate after taking this course of primolut
She said as long as I stop taking the primolut in time for my period to come I should be fine?
Is this not the case?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing again.

You did ovulate in the previous cycle as evidenced by the sonogram and more so since the hormones were taken after ovulation. You can ovulate in a similar way during this cycle also.

If you are trying to conceive, do not repeat the medication, especially Primolut, in this cycle. This is because, should you conceive, this preparation is not advisable during pregnancy. You can, instead, use micronized progesterone which is also safe in pregnancy.

Hope this helps.

Wish you good health.

regards,
Shanti.V.
