What Causes Weight Gain, Lethargy, Excessive Sleepiness And Forgetfulness?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Jan 2017
Question: We are suspecting either depression or early signs of dementia in our sister. She is 70 years old. The symptoms have come on rather rapidly but weight gain, slow response to activities (not being ready to go out) lethargic, long sleeps...and some forgetfulness have increased over that last 4 months or so. What kind of evaluation should we ask for with her primary care? She says she feels fine; she is aware that is doesn't get ready in time. She was a very particular, neat, organized person and that has all changed. Please advise.

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what your closed one has been experiencing lately.

Based on the history you have shared, it can be symptoms of senile dementia or alzheimer however it can also be early picture of parkinsons. It's better to get her evaluated in detail with a neurologist for a detailed neurological examination.

The investigations as you have asked should start from basic blood work up alongwith levels of B12 , D3 and folic acid as well as thyroid functions. Radiological investigations like CT scan to assess for any cortical atrophy or meneingeal enhancements or MRI brain. Meanwhile She can even start the supplements for B12, or folic acid.

Wishing her a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
