What Causes Weakness And Numbness In Arms And Legs?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 May 2014
Question: I woke up this morning with the left arm and chest practically dead. then later my right leg. The feeling has been running through my arms and legs all day. numbness, and tingling, I also felt a burning sensation in the veins in my left arm. I can still move, I did pushups, I did the stroke test none of my arms were falling neither was my face drooping. I think it was a tuna wrap I ate yesterday. sometimes I lay on my arm when I sleep as well. I am not obese but I am a little overweight 6'2" 227lbs. What do you think could be the cause? When the feeling comes too I begin to shake a little but it is still here.I am fully coherent. I can walk but I am a little weak. Should I sleep?

Brief Answer: Electrolyte imbalance or nutritional deficiency. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query. The feeling of weakness and numbness that you have is not likely to be due to stroke. Some common causes are nutritional deficiency, allergic reactions, excessive cold, exposure to chemicals, electrolyte imbalance etc. If you have been smoking heavily and regularly then it could also be a reason. Some measures: 1)Stop smoking completely for few days and observe for changes. 2)Avoid alcohol, sea food as it may trigger an allergic reaction.Prefer having home made food. 3)Have a glass of orange juice or any mixed fruit so that any electrolyte imbalance is corrected. 4)Avoid stress and relax your mind. 5) You can take vitamin B 12 supplements after consulting your physician. If the symptoms persist even after all these measures or worsen consider visiting a Physician for evaluation as a physical examination would be beneficial. Sleeping will not help you much. I hope this answers your query. In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out. Wishing you good health. Regards. Dr. Praveen Tayal.
