What Causes Vomiting And Severe Diarrhea While Treating Acute Bronchitis?
Question: I have acute bronchitis and every antibiotic that my doctor prescribed gave me vomiting and severe diarrhea. Do I have to take antibiotics? I also have Crohnes of the the small intestine. Could that be a reason why I get those side effects?

Based on the history you have shared, the antibiotics need should have been assessed by your doctor when he had prescribed them earlier as mostly bronchitis is due to infective etiology and needs antibiotics alongwith anti allergic meds and bronchodilators. It may trigger the flare of your primary gastric disease but the antibiotics you have mentioned specially amoxicillin and azithromycin are notorious to cause gastric disturbances. Doxy is usually itself treatment for chronic diarrhea in some infective cases however it may itself induce diarrhea.
I would recommend to discus use of moxifloxacin which has good chest coverage and has least gastric side effects relating to loose motions. A repeat Xray chest and blood picture alongwith repeat chest examination may also help your physician to decide whether you still need antibiotics or not. Keep hydration good and replace lost salt and water with Oral rehydration salts if diarrhea gets prolonged.
