Posted on Fri, 10 Apr 2015
Question: I had me period last week due to my birth control and had unprotected sex this week (he went inside of me) but got my period again 2 days later. I started my new pack after my period but was only able to take the first 5 pills, I left on a business trip & left it home. What does this mean?

Brief Answer:
likely no chances of pregnancy, provide exact details of dates

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

I can understand your concern.

Within a week of period and successful unprotected sex , no chance of pregnancy. But to give you clear idea I need to know some details.

- What is the exact date of your last menstrual period first day (before unprotected sex)?

- What is the date of unprotected sex?

-Which pills are you using? If you can provide exact detail with dose and schedule it would be more informative.

-When did you stop last pack of birth pills and when did you start new pack? Please write the date.

- When did the period start after sex? Please write date.

Waiting for your reply to help you further.

Last menstrual period forst day before unprotected sex- March 5-11th

Date of unprotected sex- Wedbesday, March 18

Birth control pills- Viorele (Desogesrel and Ethinyl tablets USP, 0.15mg/0.02mg and Ethinyl Estradiol Tablets USP, 0.01mg) I would take it everyday at 10:30 p.m.

I stopped the old pack on the 11th and started the new pack in the 12th of march. But I went on a business trip and left my pack home so I missed 3-4 pills before my period arrived again for the second time.

The second period started the 20th of March and lasted through today, March 24t

Brief Answer:
current bleeding is likely due to missing pills

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for information.

Normally if you miss pills, you should have back up protection while sex like condom.(You should be aware regarding this)

As your date of unprotected sex on 18th falls around your ovulation period, you should be cautious as this period is vulnerable for pregnancy.

However second period from 20 to 24th almost rules out pregnancy. But still we need to confirm that this early period is only due to missing pills or factor of pregnancy is there.

On 12th you started new pack but you did not mention that during which dates you missed 3-4 pills in between 13th to 20th and how the pills were taken during this period?. And are you still taking white pills?

Do you have any pain in abdomen?

At this junction your treating gynecologist is the best judge to tell you how should you restart your birth control pill.I suggest to visit him once.

Please provide details asked above so I can give more comments.

I missed the pills from the 14-18th. Once you miss a pill or two it says to stop using that pack and start a new one but I can't get abother refill until the pack is over. I took the pill on the 12th & on the 13th. I have no pain, I did have slight cramps when I got my period for the second time but thats about it. I've been hearing weird noises down there in my abdomen but no pain.

Brief Answer:
There is need to go to your doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for info. Sorry for delayed response.

If you miss one or two pill you should take 2 pills together and move forward as routine schedule.

You have stopped pills and unprotected sex. This may lead to pregnancy.

In your case thing to be evaluated is that 5 days long period (it should be called withdrawal bleeding due to missing pills)earlier than routine is associated with pregnancy or not. For that physical examination, past history, and may be ultrasound examination is needed.
5 days long period means pregnancy probably does not exist there now. But better to consult your gynecologist for final opinion and restarting the pills.

Please use condom or other alternative contraception until your period regularize.

Hope I have answered your query. If still any query there, I will be happy to answer. If not, you can close the discussion and if feasible give your feedback so I can improve service. In future you can contact me directly if you wish with this link: http://bit.ly/drchintansolanki
