Question: I am a 60 yr old women, who recently had a sexual encounter, afterward I got up to go the urinate and I noticed there was blood and what looked like blood clots in the toilet. I put a XXXXXXX pad on & later that too was soaked. I had a hysterectomy when I was about 47 years. Can you help me with what is going on? All the next day I wore a XXXXXXX pad and I was spotting brown to dark brown blood. Help!!

Brief Answer:
You probably had an injury to your vagina during sex

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Since your uterus was removed for your hysterectomy, you could only be bleeding from the vagina.

Bleeding after sex can occur in anyone who hasn't had sex in a long time if the upper part of the vagina is torn or scraped. In women who are post-menopausal and do not use hormone replacement, the vaginally can have very dry and delicate skin that is much more prone to injury than pre-menopausal. Rarely, women can tear as severely as childbirth and require suturing for the bleeding to stop.

So i do recommend for you to see a GYN doctor for an examintaion of the bleeding if it doesn't stop within a few days. Yiu may have a cut inside your vagina that may require suturing.

But I at least want to reassure you that without a uterus and cervix, the dangerous causes of bleeding in this case have been ruled out.

Please abstain from putting anything inside the vagina until you have a doctor's examination.

I hope this information was reassuring and that I was able to adequately answer your question. If you need anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
