What Causes Unusual Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: I am a 42 year old female. I started my menstrual cycle on august 13 and I have continuously been bleeding as of yet. Do I need to be concerned or is this an age thing happening? I have had regular cycles all of my life. I had a son 5 years ago and since then my periods have been regular but have been heavy but only last 5 to 7 days.

Brief Answer:
This is a very long time and you need to be evaluated!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these periods that have lasted so long. The duration is a concern to me and i will suggest that you get evaluated for this. The cause must be identified and treated accordingly. It could be related to age but there are other disease conditions especially hormonal imbalances, fibroids, etc that may explain this. I will rather like to see these disease conditions investigated and roles out before settling on hormonal and aging as possible causes. The best doctor to see is an OBGYN. In the meantime, I will encourage you to start iron pills as you have been loosing so much blood and may easily become anemic.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
