What Causes Tooth Pain And Facial Swelling After Root Canal Treatment?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 May 2017
Question: Hi. My name is XXXXXXX I had a severe infection and had a root canal while away from home today. The dentist gave me Motrin 800 mg and 500 mg amocilian. I've had Motrin of 400 mg at 12 noon and then 800 mg at 5:30 pm. I took 500 mg of amoxicillin at noon and 6:30. I have taken way too many antibiotics in my 66 years. I find now that sometimes they aren't necessarily effective.
My face continues to swell and the pain is a level 8 when the meds wear off. I just took two Tylenol about 10:30 pm
I also take amloipine 5 mg. I am due to take the amoxicillin at midnight. Instead can I take 1 of 100 mg of doxycycline now? I have kept ice on all day but my face continues to swell. I am afraid that the amoxicillin isn't working.
Please help. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Looks like the tooth has an abscess..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Well, if you are on a script of Amoxicillin, it is advisable to complete its course and not simply switching to another antibiotic without a proper dosage, course and prescription..

Taking a single dose of Doxycycline will not do much of help and you need to either take a full course of Doxycycline if you think that Amoxicillin is not working..

You can even try Augmentin ( Amoxicillin + Clavulanic potassium)as clavulanate boosts the functioning of Amoxicillin..

For now it will be better to take Amoxicillin only..

However your tooth still looks infected, so taking antibiotics alone will not solve the problem.
Get an x ray done followed by appropriate treatment like re-Root canal treatment to resolve the problem..

Please write back for more queries..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
