What Causes Tinnitus And Swollen Lymph Node After Quitting Snuff-dipping?

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Question: Hello doctor, i recently quit using dipping snuff about 3 weeks ago and ive been having odd oral issues ever since. However my Fordyce Granules seem to be going away along with my fissured tongue, I recently developed tinnitus in my right ear and have unusually swollen/purple lymphoid tissue behind my right tonsil. The right side of my neck is particularly tender by the joint of my mandible. But it may be worth noting i do have recurring tonsillitis and ive had post-nasal drip since i was a child. Also i recently developed a 1cm mucocele on the roof of my mouth and there are a few very small ones in the back of my throat.

Brief Answer:
Withdrawal effect of snuffing...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query.

After going through the history I am of the opinion that the present symptoms of yours are partially related to the sudden withdrawal effect of the snuff.

Secondly, the tinnitus could be related to the Eustachian tube (the tube connecting nose and the ear) block. Eustachian tube block happens when there is nasal and sinus congestion. This is also one of the causes for post nasal drip and the pain below the right ear.

Do not worry! These are all simple problems which can be taken care of with appropriate measures.

My suggestions to you are:
1. Drink plenty of warm water - Adequate rehydration, clears the nasal congestion, and reduces the tinnitus and the post nasal drip.
2. Do steam inhalation - to relieve the nasal congestion, tinnitus and the post nasal drip.
3. Avoid coffee/chilled food and beverages.
4. Use saline nasal spray, to clear the nasal secretions and to open the Eustachian tube block.
5. Do not worry about the mucocele; it will reduce by itself with adequate rehydration.

Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.

Thank you doctor. I just had a couple more questions. Could my dairy allergy be partially at fault for this? Do hot foods/beverages exacerbate it, and it there a possibility that a cyst or tumor is the cause, or possibly glue ear?

Brief Answer:
Allergy to dairy products is not the cause...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

1. Allergy for dairy products can cause the above symptoms. But, if you are allergic to it, you would have noticed these problems during your childhood itself and not now.
2. In this age of yours there are no known tumors which can cause glue ear.
3. Hot food and beverages can exacerbate the present problems.

Hope this clears your doubts. Wish you good health.
