What Causes Tingling In Finger After An Ulna Neuropathy Surgery?

default
Posted on Sat, 27 Dec 2014
Question: In 2009 I had Ulna Neuropathy surgery on my left elbow. This year the tingling has began in my pinky and finger alongside it again but now there can be extreme pain shooting all the way down from my elbow to my wrist and my elbow burns if I touch it. The pain is not constant but if I over use my arm can be unbearable at times. I am a super active female of 62 years old and use my hands daily as a Dog Groomer and trainer. Is it possible this surgery will be needed again? My specialist did not seem to think this would happen. Unfortunately I was his last patient of his very long and successful career so I am unable to go back and ask him. I have never once had an issue with it until now, no pain, no feeling of tingling and then it seems like over night I was experiencing the tingling and the pain began rather quickly after.

Thanks for your time

Brief Answer:
Due to irritation of ulnar nerve.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The symptoms that you are having now are due to irritation of the ulnar nerve. It can be due to inflammation of the tendons or nerve inflammation caused by stress. Fibrosis around the nerve after surgery can also cause this. A repeat surgery may not be needed.

Diagnosis can vary from carpal tunnel syndrome to bursitis and tennis elbow. Exact diagnosis can be made only after proper examination by an orthopaedician. So I suggest you to consult one.

In the meanwhile, for symptomatic relief:
1. Give enough rest to your hand muscle.
2. Take mild pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
3. Stronger prescription NSAIDS with muscle relaxants may help if simple analgesics do not help.
4. Hot compresses to your arm and elbow will be useful pain relieving measure. You may apply a local analgesic gel on that area.
5. Wrist and forearm stretches can be helpful under the guidance of a physiotherapist.
Local steroid injections can help in case the pain is persistent.
I hope this answers your query.
