What Causes Tightness In Chest And Shortness Of Breath?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: Since swimming in sea of 14 degrees - 2hours at the end of March in Mallorca, I have had tightness in chest and SOB on and off I had to stop the swim as I thought I was having a severe asthma attack, something which I do not suffer from. The day before I had completed 5 hours without any ill effect. I have been taking serotide twice daily and commenced ventolin but these do not alleviate the symptons. Yesterday I swam in XXXXXXX Harbour and had and "asthma " attack- difficult breathing and shortness of breath so I stopped after 1.75 hours (water was13). The week before I swam 2 hours (water 12 degrees) with no ill effect. I have coughed up mucous in the sea but never pink.

Brief Answer:
You might be having bronchitis.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your situation and problem.
In my opinion you are mostly having bronchitis and not asthma.
Something is causing inflammation in your airways which is causing breathlessness.
For confirmation better to get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) during normal time and after swimming during attack.
It will diagnose bronchitis.
You may need additional oral bronchodilators and anti inflammatory drugs.
So consult pulmonologist and discuss all these.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.
