Question: I am 69 and just had an ultrasound and was told I have thickened vaginal wall. My Dr' office called me one hour after the exam and said I have to see gyn. They said it will be 3-5 days for the referral. Can you give me any info?

Brief Answer:
It is thick endometrial lining.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to HealthcareMagic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns.

I think, they mentioned it as thickened uterine lining and not vaginal wall. In the postmenopause state normally the uterine lining should not be more than 4 mm.

The reasons for thick uterine lining are:

1. Hormone replacement treatment
2. Use of Tamoxifen
3. Endometrial polyp
4. Endometrial hyperplasia
5. Very Rarely due to uterine cancer

Though the possibility of any malignancy is rare, because of the seriousness of the condition you are given early referral to Gynecologist.

I hope this is helpful.
If you have further concerns I will be happy to answer.
Best wishes,
Dr Rama

The tech also asked me if it hurt when she was doing the exam. It did not hurt but does that mean she saw something?

Brief Answer:
It does not mean that she saw something.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

If the vagina is dry, the ultrasound examination causes discomfort. That is the reason for the tech asking that question to you.

It does not mean that she saw something.

Regards,
Dr Rama
