Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

A swollen neck gland can be caused by a number of things. If it is a lymph gland that is swollen, it could be from an infection or drainage on that side of the head/neck such in the sinuses or mouth and teeth.

A swollen neck gland can also sometimes be an inflamed or obstructed salivary gland.

Also, sometimes an enlarged blood vessel can feel a bit like a swollen gland. But a gland is something you can kind of get your fingers around whereas a blood vessel is not.

If it just started recently, it is more likely to be from inflammation or infection than from a malignancy. But regardless it should be checked out soon. If it is tender or you have a fever, you should be seen tonight. Otherwise, see your doctor next week.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.

Thank you for the information you sent me. For some reason the swelling has completely subsided over night so I am wondering if exertion from hard work, like pruning trees, could have triggered it?

Brief Answer:
Less likely to be a lymph node.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Given that the swelling subsided over night, I am thinking it is less likely to be a lymph node. It's possible it was a swollen muscle but perhaps it was an enlarged blood vessel? Is your blood pressure well controlled?

I would keep an eye on the area and see if it recurs with exertion.
