What Causes Swollen Face And Hands With Abdominal Pain In A Child?
Question: Hello Doctor,
My Baby her age is 2 years 8 months. Suddenly she got the below symptoms :
1) Crying since yesterday morning
2) She said she is having stomach ache.
3) We have given Stomach pain medicine. But, still its not stopping.
4) Evening time she got swelling in face eyes and check specifically & right hand fingers and palm.
5) She is able to pass urine normally, and we did normal Urine test and there is no symptom of any kind of urine infection in it.
6) Pediatrician has given the below medicine to her and told to wait 2 more days.
Medicine Name : Atarax (3 times a day 2.5 ml)

Our assumption : She started to going school since 10 days and they are giving food in school always. A week back she got vomiting and loose motion. Now, again after a week she got the above symptom. Now, she is just crying and she is not able to mention anything. one more thing is our neighbor has given her mutton kheema yesterday.
Pediatrician told us to check her urine color until now it is yellow and passing normally. Could you please advise is this because food allergy or anything else?

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns but don't worry. Your daughter seems to be suffering from an allergic episode known as allergic angioedema. The most likely reason is an allergic reaction to some food she had take in past few days.
It happens due to release of inflammatory mediators in response to allergens in food leading to subcutaneous and bowel wall fluid collection leading to swelling of face, extremities and pain abdomen.
The treatment you are following is fine. You may take the following measures to help her further:
1. Give antacids such as Ranitidine or Lansoprazole for pain relief.
2. Continue Atarax and Phena P as advised by your pediatrician.
3. Go for an ultrasound abdomen in case the pain is severe to rule out surgical causes.
4. Stools examination to rule out parasitic infestations.
5. Try to find out the allergen in food in future.
Usually these episodes improve in 3-4 days completely. In case, there is any progression of symptoms in spite of above management, then go for complete clinical examination. She may need injection epinephrine to treat the condition.
