What Causes Swollen Face After Having Advil?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Nov 2014
Question: I had a headache/bodyaches and took an advil around noon 12pm yesterday. After dinner I walked into my car and saw that one side of my face was slightly swollen. Within about 5 minutes my face started to swell significantly and I broke out into hives all over my body. I woke up this morning with extreme eye swelling and hives under my eyes and even fingers and itching. I took some Benadryl and the hives have calmed down but still have facial swelling as well as fatigue. I've taken Advil a few time before and have never experienced these symptoms. I thought that maybe I was having an allergic reaction to something I ate during dinner (pork) but I've eaten pork several times without any reaction. Could this be an allergic reation to advil?

Brief Answer:
Allergy likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
From the description it seems that you are having an allergic reaction. It can be due to advil or due to some environmental factors or something in the food.
Drug allergy is more likely to develop after taking 1-2 doses of the drug. Skin rashes, hives, itching, swelling and wheezing are commonly seen as a result of allergy. There is no way to prevent development of allergy.
Do not take next dose of Advil.
Try calamine medicated lotion.
Hydrocortisone cream (1%) is available without a prescription and may soothe many rashes.
I hope this answers your query.

Dr. Tayal,
Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to medication (advil) 10 hours after taking it?

Brief Answer:
Less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Not likely. Usually the drug related reactions start in 30 minutes- 2 hours. If the rashes appeared after 10 hours then it is less likely to be due to the medicine.
Hope my answer is helpful.
