What Causes Swollen Eyes And Drainage In Throat?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Nov 2014
Question: Hello Doctor,
I think I am having sinus problems. Every morningI wake up with swollen eyes that can last through out the day.I thought it was the make-up but now I don't think so. I also have drainage in my throat and in the morning I sneeze like crazy, So may be a combination of allergies and Sinus? I have been taking hydroclorothiazide 12.5 mil. but that does not relieve the swelling of my eyes. I look terrible. Can you help? I thought aspirin would do it but it also doesn't relieve the swelling. My eyes tear as well in the morning and when I rub my eyes I feel the swelling in the back of my eyes. My nose is always full. I am also on Xarelto

Brief Answer:
Nasal endoscopy with eosinophilic count.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

With such presentation in my clinic, I would first do nasal endoscopy to rule out sinusitis secondary to allergic ployp (ecosprin can cause allergic rhinitis and allergic polyp). complete blood picture with absolute eosinophilic count to know the severity of allergic rhinitis.

Once Iam sure this is not life threatening I will start on antibiotics (sinusitis), nasal steroid sprays ( allergic rhinitis with allergic rhinitis). I would also start prophylactic medication like montelukast as a oral medication for allergic rhinitis. For stuffy nose, steam inhalation and nasal decongestants like xylometazoline can be tried. According to findings of investigations other medications can be started.

In my opinion, you need to consult a cardialogist for BP monitering and heart status at the age of 72 . These medications can be taken as per the advise of cardialogist. (hydroclorothiazide 12.5 mg + Xarelto + ecosprin).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
