What Causes Swelling Of The Legs And Ankles

default
Posted on Mon, 11 May 2015
Question: My mother is in the last stage of Primary Liver Cancer, she also has A Fib. My mother's feet and ankles are extremely swollen and she at times cannot feel her feet. My grandfather also died of this same cancer. My question to you is there anything that we, her family, can do other than elevating her feet to help with the swelling so that her feet do not start leaking fluid as my grandfather's did. This is my mothers greatest fear, her body leaking. You should know also that my mother only weighs 56lbs. Thank you, XXXX

Brief Answer:
compression stockings may help

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Swelling of the legs and ankles can be related to liver disease, heart disease, kidney disease , venous disease , trauma or a combination of one or more of these factors.

With liver disease, it may be related to low protein levels or if the enlarged liver is compressing or affecting blood flow from the legs to the heart.
Elevation would help to improve blood flow back to the heart but you can also try compression stockings as well.

The compression stockings would help improve flow back as well.

If her doctor approves, as well, the use of protein may also help.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
