What Causes Swelling In The Foot?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Jan 2017
Question: I have noticed in recent days (about 4) that my feet have become swollen. I had dropped something on my left foot a week ago, but there was no bruising. Now the foot is swollen and the right foot is also swollen.

Brief Answer:
Needs evaluation by kidney and liver functions

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what you had been experiencing lately. Based on the history you have shared, if swelling has been preceeded with history of trauma or like you have mentioned dropping an object over, it was supposed to be unilateral that is only in one foot.

Since its in both feet it needs evaluation in detail and to start with some basic blood tests including kidney and liver functions as well as to have urinalysis to look for any signs of protien leak. Serum albumin may also be done and a spot protien creatinine ratio can also determine if something is wrong with the kidney functioning as it can lead to swollen feet.

Also get your thyroid levels checked and a baseline echo cardiogram to assess ejection fraction or pumping ability of the heart to rule put any signs of decreased pushing of blood forward and dumping more backward. If the swelling is accompanied with pain or increased temperature a baseline uric acid levels and local ultrasound and Xray may be needed.

Meanhwile keep a check on any signs like fever or frothing in urine. Hope it will be something trivial. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.

Thank you for your response. I have had my creatinine levels checked before a liver scan. There appeared no significant issue at that time. I DO have some thyroid issues and have been on medication since my mid twenties. There was also a pulmonary situation which resulted in CT scans and more blood tests. I was diagnosed in January of having Myasthenia Gravis and have been taking Mestinon. My pulmonary doctor wonders if some of my issues are do to this condition. Is that possible?

Brief Answer:
Whole labs need to be repeated and reviewed again

Detailed Answer:
Hi!,

Thanks for sharing the details.

Since it is a new advancement and all the conditions you have mentioned can directly or indirectly cause such swellings so these tests and work up needs to be repeated again and to see any ascending or descending trends too. Also the conditions like myesthenia needs regular follow up to titrate the medications from time to time and same is true about thyroid condition. So a repeat visit with your primary doctor and repetition of these labs is almost inevitable.

Regards.
