Brief Answer:
You need to consult a physician and get examined.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

The medical term for swelling is Edema.

I need to ask some questions in order to give a more accurate opinion to your medical condition:
-It is important to know how long it has been since you first noticed the swelling problem?
-Did the swelling start gradually or you was healthy and one day you noticed this?
-Is the swelling in your face more evident in the morning?
-Do you ever feel like you can't breath especially when you exercise?
-Have you ever had kidney problems ?
-Have you ever had liver problems?
-Are you taking any kind of medication during this time?

If your edema is developed gradually, chronic conditions can be the cause including:
-Heart disease (congestive heart failure)
-Liver disease (cirrhosis )
-Kidney disease. A kidney condition called nephrotic syndrome can result in severe leg edema, and sometimes whole-body edema (anasarca).

If the swelling is developed within some hours it might be sign of allergic reaction and you need to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

It is important to consult a physician and get examined because edema can be a sign of serious conditions and need to be evaluated.
To understand what might be causing your edema, your doctor will perform a physical exam to evaluate the severity of edema and run some tests including :
- X-ray,
-Heart ultrasound
-Abdominal ultrasound
-Blood test including liver function tests and kidney function tests,
-Urine analysis.

Hope my answer has helped.
If you have further questions please feel free to write me back,I will be happy to help.
Take care

It has been on and off for 2 years. This is the worst it has ever been. It was gradual. I can't breathe when I exercise.

Brief Answer:
You should consult a physician and get examined.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again dear!

The fact that the swelling was developed gradually and it is getting worse, indicates that the cause is a chronic progressive condition.

I suggest to consult a physician and get examined as soon as possible.
You need to do a complete cardiac check-up :-physician examination,ECG,Heart ultrasound to see if your heart is causing this.
If your heart is normal then your doctor will guide you for further investigations in order to sort out the right cause of this edema.

I am not sure if we can get to the bottom of this problem without investigations. Therefore please visit your physician. ER visit if you become breathless at rest.

Let me know if you have any further question.
Wish you good luck with your investigation.

All the best.
