Question: Hi Doctor,

I have a little bit swelling below my right ears and end of jaw. It is not painful, when I press on its a little bit discomfort and my ears seems feels to be a little blocked. I am a regular smoker and chew tobacco. I am was worried if it is cancer. I went a GP and he told me that it just because of parotid gland and nothing much to worry. He asked if I have cough or high fever. I told I am normal don't have any other symptoms. He has not prescribed any medicine. He told it will be alright. I am still worried if it could be serious. Please let me know what are the sysmptoms that I need to be worried about and any antibiotic to get this cured or any home remedies would be helpful.

Thanks and Regards

Brief Answer:
You should be investigated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As per your description, it looks like a swelling of Parotid gland.
In case of parotitis, which is infection of the gland, there will be pain and swelling associated with fever. As these are absent, infection is excluded .Antibiotics will not be helpful.
Next possibility is Pleomorphic adenoma, commonest benign lesion of the parotid . FNAC ( Fine Needle aspiration Cytology ) of the swelling will confirm the diagnosis. If it is confirmed, Surgery has to be done.
Please consult your Surgeon and get an FNAC.
If you come back with FNAC report, I will clarify further.
Hope I answered your query.
Wish you good health.
Regards

hello doctor,

I am highly worried now after going through the answer. Does this mean i really have a cancer in the gland. or it is just a hunch (10%). What are the other symptoms I should have if I have pleomorphic-adenoma. Is chewing tobacco the main cause. Which specialist should i contact now in XXXXXXX what would be cost of the surgery if I have pleomorphic-adenoma and other post operative complication. As it a small swelling how long can i wait to confirm it to be pleomorphic-adenoma before visiting the doctor. Any medicines I can take to see if it is subsiding. How long will I live , the fear death is now at the highest.

Brief Answer:
Pleomorphic adenoma is not Cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
All swellings are not malignant / Cancerous. Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign swelling, not cancer.
FNAC ( Fine Needle aspiration Cytology ) report of the swelling will be given in one day.
Tobacco chewing has no link to it.
Most of the times, the presentation will be a Swelling only.
Please consult your Surgeon immediately and get an FNAC. Exact diagnosis will be confirmed.
Then,we can think of Surgery and it's complications.
It could be a Enlarged lymphnode in FNAC. The role of medicines will be decided only by FNAC report.
Do not worry.
So,please get an FNAC first.
Hope I answered your query.
Regards
