What Causes Stiffness And Pain In The Neck When I Swallow?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: I have an extremely stiff neck and it hurts when I swallow or yawn. I slept sitting up last night, since the pain kept me awake. Right now, I am standing up typing this questions, and my neck is not swollen, but it feels like I strained it somehow. I'm sipping tea and with each swallow gives me pain but it's not a sore throat pain it's a neck pain which I've never had before.

Brief Answer:
Muscles inflammation can be the reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such symptoms can be caused by muscles inflammation or spinal cord and nerves compression.
Muscles inflammation can appear due to staying long in one position or heaving the neck on the cold air for a while (like sitting in the front of AC).
Spinal cord compression is usually caused by spine disc compression. Characteristic for this issue is headache and the pain tends to radiates along the arms. Some tingling or weakness of the arms can be present as well.

I suggest you to try some home remedies first. Please take a hot bath or put a heating pad on the neck. You should also take antiinflammatory medicines like Ibuprophen or Diclophenac.

If this wont help, you should consult neurologist.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
