What Causes Sleeplessness And Feeling Discomfort In One Of The Twin Girls?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Apr 2015
Question: We have twin girls and they are 5 weeks old now, one of the baby seems to be having some discomfort especially after 7:00pm, its been a couple of days since she is showing this behavior. She cries a lot and after great difficulty takes small naps but gets up with a lot of pain (it seems)
We tried giving her colic drop yesterday after all the initial try's to put her to sleep, it seemed to work but we are worried that its not a good practice to give colic drops every day, what's your recommendation please.

She seems to feel a bit of a relief if we put her on our shoulders, we feel she has discomfort in the stomach.

Also, what about giving the babies pacifiers, is it a good practice? when should we avoid not giving pacifiers?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Colic drops not harmful.Try burping the child properly.Do not use pacifiers

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking again on HealthcareMagic.

Often while feeding, the child ingests some amount of air along. This air causes abdominal distention and hence discomfort. Colicaid and similar drops contain simethicone which helps in expelling this air and provides relief. There is no health problem that you need to worry about if you give such a medicine. A better and home alternative is proper burping. Hold the baby upright for about 20 mins after each feed. This way, the air will automatically rise upward and get expelled. It should provide relief.

I would strongly advise against giving pacifiers. These are potential sources of infection. They come in contact with things around and may carry the bacteria to the child. Moreover, it might have a better shape than mother's nipple and after taking pacifiers, the child often does not like to breast feed. So, you should avoid giving pacifiers outright.

Hope that helps.
