What Causes Shortness Of Breath While Swallowing Food?

default
Posted on Sat, 24 Jun 2017
Question: Occasionally (every three or four months) while eating I get very short of breath as I swallow my mouthful of food. I breath slowly and with difficultly and occasionally this condition may be proceeded with hiccups. It feels like my chest fills with air, and I can't expel the air. This last time the problem was more intense and lasted longer and I had pain in my chest. These occurrences last about one to four minutes. Any ideas? XXXXXXX XXXX YYYY@YYYY

Dysphagia most likely

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HealthcareMagic and thanks for putting up the query,

The problem you are facing is usually due to anxiety and eating very fast or in large portion or even when someone is engaged over something else while eating like on XXXXXXX or laptop etc.

Please tell me if you have any such symptoms:

Any history of regurgitation or indigestion and burning sensation in the throat?
Any history of constipation?

Please do follow up with the required information so that I can suggest you better.
Thanks and regards

None of these things apply to me: I do not have anxiety, nor eat fast or in large bites of food, nor engaged in something else while eating.
No history of regurgitation, indigestion, or burning sensation in my throat.

These infrequent incidents come on suddenly, without warning. Usually I am eating Chinese food, but this last time was chicken and carrots.

Could this be a serious problem?

Dysphagia

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the information.
This doesn't seem to be anything serious but it's better to get investigated. You should get a barium swallow study and endoscopic examination of the throat done and if it is normal nothing else to be done.
I would suggest you to follow few lifestyle measures like avoid spicy foods and aerated drinks. Eat while not doing anything else and ear small bites.
You are always welcome with any further questions.
Take care
Thanks and regards
