What Causes Sharp Pain In The Chest While Breathing?

Question: I have been paining since last Sunday with a sharp pain in the left breath but it only when I try to laid down and i get up the pain is so bad until I almost cry but I go through the day working and not paining at all the upper left shoulder leading DOWARD TOWARD MY BREATH NOT SICK ON THE STOMACH AND NO OTHER PAINS JUST THAT HARD PAIN IN THE LEFT BREATH WHEN I GO TO GET UP HAVE TO HOLD MY BREATH CLOSE TO MY BODY AND GET UP SLOW TO TRY AND EASY MY PAINS IAM TENDER IN THE AREA WHERE I HAD HARD PAINS I FEEL ALITTLE SORE WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS ARE THEY SYSPTOMS OF A HEART ATTACK IAM GOING FOR MY MAMMOGRAM TOMORROW

1) Does this pain get referred to any other area?

2) When you breathe deep does pain get bad?

3) Did you get an ECG?

4) any heart issues in family

5) Does this pain occur in exercion or occurs in rest too?

6) Using any meds?

7) Hows does your choleterol and bp stay

1. no just my shoulder blades and left breath 2. no only feel soreness where I was paining so bad 3. no haven't been to the doctor yet 4.mother had some heart problems she is deceased now natural death from cancer 5.pain when I"m at rest when I work on my job i'm not in any pain but once I get kindly comfort I feel the pain start off like a little pin stick once I get up from laying down the pain is so hard and hurt so bad for about 2 seconds 6. no medicine but b/p table amlodipine besylate 5 mg whenever I go to doctor cholerterol and b/p would be fine I never had this type of pain before and for so long

Hi thanks for writing back,

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way.

I understand your concern and being a RESIDENT OF CARDIOLOGY myself, i will hereby try to talk about differentials for your better understanding and alleviating the anxiety you must be in.

Cardiac pains:
1- They are NEVER sharp excruciating pains,they are dull pains like sore muscles or a compression.

2-They start with work out and go away as you are at rest.

3- When its paining they in most case get relieved by a nitroglycerin tab under tongue.

4- Regular "work out cardiac pains" (angina) usually show up in stress testing.

5- They never Get worsened by food intake, they stay the same.

My opinion:

1- Its is not a cardiac issue doesn't fit ANY criteria. so you shouldn't be worried.

2-This looks like chostocondritis this can be relieved easily.

WHAT CAN BE DONE:
1- Warm compresses at the tender area really help in most patients.
2- Local pain killer cream/gel like burfen cream or diclofenac Cream.
3- Pain killer like Tylenol do help.
4- I will encourage you to visit your physician and if you can visit a rheumatologist or an orthopaedic doctor, it will be great.
5- If this doesn't respond to simple pain killer treatment, your doctor may switch you to anti inflammatory meds and opioids.
6- You may also get consult with a physiotherapist for more targeted exercises.
7- As you have history of cancer in your mother, your should get a memogram and get cancer ruled out.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

It just needs one or two months of good treatment care and physiotherapy and things will be much better.

hi Dr XXXXXXX thank you for the input I feel much better to know that the pain are not issue of cardiac I will try warm towels and heating pad to the sore hurting areas and hope this will help before I go to the doctor also I went for my mamma today the nurse said everything looks good but I got to talk to the doctor on tomorrow after he looks at the mammogram results because the doctor were in a conference meeting and was unable to see in one results today so I feel good about what the nurse said I will keep you in formed about my progress to let you know if the warm towels and heating pad helps want close you out as of yet because I may need to ask more question thanks again and you have a blessed day and a nice Easter weekend with your love ones
