Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: I need to know which doctor to go to for extreme back pain, leg pain and shoulder pain. I went to an orthopaedic surgeon with my MRI and am also going to pain management for shots and nothing is helping. Am also taking percoset for pain and it doesn't relieve it. Tens unit also doesn't help. Which specialist could get to the root of my problem?

Brief Answer:
Please consult neurosurgeon.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

You should consult neurosurgeon. They usually are much better in spine issues and for sure can help with herniated disc. Your pain can be due to herniated disc which compresses the nerve. So the pain can be very bad depending of the compression amount.
Shoulder pain can indicate that the herniation is in the cervical level of the spine as well. I assume that you have only lower part spine MRI. If so, also cervical spine MRI should be done.

If the shoulder pain radiates to the palm, some compression (carpal tunnel syndrome) in the wrist can be the reason. Hand surgeon can help with such problem.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Orthopaedic surgeon says herniated discs aren't bad enough to be causing the severe pain. Is a neurophysiology doctor ok?

Brief Answer:
Neurophysiology doctor is fine.

Detailed Answer:
Well, orthopedist a good in bones. Neurosurgeon are good in nerves. And spine is build of nerves mostly and just covered with bones. That is why, neurosurgeon is much better address. I would insist to consult a good neurosurgeon.
Neurophysiology doctor is fine. He should at least perform EMG test and determine where is the compression located.
