What Causes Severe Hip Pain?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Aug 2017
Question: my right hip is in excruciating pain for the past 4 days. I cant sleep on my right side or it will wake me up. Feels like a knife is stabbing my in my hip. I also have pain during the day walking on that hip. I have an appointment with ortho doctor in September. Is this more serious than I think and should I get to another Dr. right away? It is not going away at all.

Brief Answer:
Needs consultation earlier

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your medical history in detail.

The symptoms that you have mentioned seem to be more likely of a osteoarthritis of hip or an avascular necrosis of femoral head.Rarely,a slipped intervertebral disc in the lumbar spine can also cause a referred pain in the hip.

All of the above mentioned conditions need to be diagnosed and investigated as early as possible.
September is too far away and waiting so long may aggravate or complicate the issues more.

So,in my opinion you should try and see another orthopedist as soon as possible and get necessary investigations like Xray/MRI of right hip and the lumbar spine done.

Taking anti inflammatory tablets like ibuprofen or tramadol will help till then.
Take adequate rest and avoid sleeping or bearing more weight on the affected limb.

I hope the answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Kind regards.
