Question: My Father has terminal bladder cancer and terminal squamous sarcoma of the epiglottis. He was given 7-8 months by Mayo clinic oncoolgists in XXXXXXX I am worried because the last week he has been sleeping 14 hours or more a day. He has dark circles under his eyes and his eyes are very bloodshot. He coughs a lot and does not eat much. Is this a sign he is going to die soon? I am very scared. He is on hospice and not recieving anything but Tramadol for pain.

Brief Answer:
so sorry for his situation

Detailed Answer:
hi welcome to health care magic.I am extremely sorry for your father's condition.
It is hard to tell whether he's in terminal condition or not.
However, excess sleep do not always mean end stage disease. As he is not on good feeding, there can be multiple metabolic derangements that can result in drowsiness excessive sleep.
on the other side terminal cancer patients can have the cancer extended to brain, resulting in drowsiness and excessive sleep. when the cancer has spread to lungs it can result in cough.
If you are not sure about his condition, it is better to hospitalize him and get intravenous nutrition and palliative care.
Let us hope for his troublefreee life, whatever is left.
