What Causes Severe Bruising On Legs?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 May 2014
Question: Hi, I have developed massive bruising mainly on my legs, although they do appear elsewhere. Over a period of perhaps two months? The bruises have hard lumps in them and do not seem to be healing. Bloods are normal but redoing clotting one. At the end of my tether. Can you help shed some light?

Brief Answer:
you could be having erythema nodosum

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
From the description, it seems you could be having erythema nodosum. It is inflammation of fat layer beneath skin due to infection, inflammation or recent new medicine use. It presents as painful red bumps usually over legs specifically shins and fades away as a bruise. it may be associated with fever, cough, joint or body pain
It is self resolving however a course of oral steroid might be required.

Another differential could be erythema induratum.

Clinical examination and biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis. Please upload an image showing your lesions. This would help me in taking this discussion further.
Regards

I can't seem to upload a picture, but the bruises are the size of my clenched fist on average. I had more bloods taken today, and went through the results of last tests. The only anomoly is a high white blood cell count, high platelet count and the RBC are bigger than normal but of good colour. Liver kidney function good.
My current medications include Cymbalta and Lamictal at 90 mg and 200 mg respectively.
