What Causes Right Sided Pain While Having Free Fluid Around The Left Ovary?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Jul 2014
Question: Hello....I had a transvaginal ultrasound today and the tech said there was free fluid around the left ovary and some around part of the uterus. I have had right sided pain for about a month (it is not terrible pain...just annoying) I am 61. I have read that women who are still having a period can have free fluid at times, but what about someone my age who has not had a period for 10 years or so? Also, I have had some blood tinged discharge for about two weeks (not a lot) And 3 UTI's this year also, which I never used to get. I am not sexually active. Thank you!!!

Brief Answer:
To rule out pelvic inflammatory disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms,

There seems to be no relationship with right sided pain and finding of free fluid around left ovary.
I would require additional information about the right sided pain you have been having
1. Is the pain continuous?
2. Where is the exact location of pain?
3. Is there associated nausea/vomiting?
4. Is there on and off fever?

If the right sided pain is in lower abdomen , possibility of appendicitis(chronic) or Pelvic inflammatory disease needs to be considered especially in relationship to finding free fluid . Menstruating individuals may have free fluid usually from rupture of corpus luteum cyst associated with ovulation. It less common a finding in post menopausal individuals.

Presence of any amount of vaginal bleeding in post menopausal individual requires thorough evaluation and assessment by Gynaecologist. The cause could be as simple as vaginitis/cervicitis which can only be inferred from evaluation.
Post menopausal individual have higher frequency of UTI compared to pre-menopausal because of loss of protective effect from oestrogen. If the ultrasound of kidney , ureter and bladder has not revealed any pathology then there is no cause for concern.
