What Causes Renal Colic?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Apr 2015
Question: I have been having a lot of pan in right flank that goes down all the way to my lower abdomen. I have been unable to keep any down no matter what I have tried to eat or drink. Not been able to pass a lot of urine, "large" amount of blood in urine when tested on Tuesday. Nurse at work is worried about renal failure because there was no kidney stone on ct scan on Sunday and doctor at ER said blood work "looked Okay". What should I do?

Brief Answer:
There is no renal failure with "Okay" blood work

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

first of all you shouldn't worry too much about your renal function because a good blood work is not compatible with renal failure. I understand that your CT scan had nothing abnormal. Since you've had blood in the urine, a renal colic is very likely. If you can pass urine and the pain has stopped then there is probably no danger from obstruction.

If the pain is ongoing then you can check with an ultrasound scan for obstruction in either ureter. When the ureter is obstructed, the urologist should intervene to save the kidney.

So in conclusion, if you still have symptoms and you haven't yet seen a urologist then this is a great time to do so.

Kind Regards!
