What Causes Red Rashes In Feet, Upper Arms, Fore Arms, Wrist And Hands?

Posted on Wed, 18 May 2016
Question: my 19 year old daughter has a rash all over her. Red patches on the tops of both feet, under upper arms, under side of fore arms, wrists, tops of hands, her legs and her stomach. None on her back, neck or face. It looks sort of like ringworm but the inside is completely red too, not just the outer ring. They also do not itch! She has had this for around 6 weeks now and has been applying a clotrimazole cream for about 4 weeks. It seems to be getting better on her hands but not really anywhere else!! Also, one very important piece is that she had one larger patch on her stomach that appeared at the end of last summer but never bothered her so she didn't do anything about it! All of the other little patches look just like it but smaller. She was dropped from her insurance so cannot get lab work done until her new insurance kicks in on April 1st. She has no other symptoms either.. Help pleeeeaase!!

Brief Answer:
kindly upload images

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com. I have read your query. I understand your concern.
As per details, it is most likely to be fungal infection only. But possibility of other differentials like Discoid Eczema, Erythema annulare centrifugum, annular psoriasis should also be considered. I will advise you to upload some images of the rash so that I can actually visualize the lesions and advice you to my best.
Take care.

Brief Answer:
topical steroid like mometasone with oral antihistaminics

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome back. I have seen the attached photographs also. Thanks for attatching the images. The photos are blurred. But I can make out red patches over body.
1) It appears to be Allergic rash to me from the images. The various precipitating factors may include recent Infection, any food, seasonal change, drugs etc.
2) Another possible diagnosis is Psoriasis. But I couldn't see any scales overlying the rash. Absence of scales goes against the diagnosis of Psoriasis.
3) PMLE -it is allergic reaction to sunlight known as Polymorphic light eruption. It is characterised by red colored itchy eruptions over sun exposed areas of body.

It doesn't look like fungal to me. So clotrimazole didn't help much.

In all the above mentioned differentials , topical steroid like mometasone works. Alongwith oral antihistaminics like levocetrizine is advised for symptomatic relief.

She may apply topical moderate to strong potency steroid like mometasone over the rash for 7-10days under supervision of treating doctor.
I hope it helps you.
Stay healthy.
