Posted on Thu, 9 Oct 2014
Question: Hi, I believe I have symptoms that lead towards a fungal/yeast overgrowth (Candida) etc. I get red burning patches on my face and itchy skin throughout the day. My skin itches all over my body at times. I will be going to the doctor today is there a specific test/tests I should ask them to do to test for this? Thanks, XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Candida is part of normal flora

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

The red burning patches may be photosensitivity. Itchy skin may be allergy or perhaps candida if it is associated with dry skin. Though if you can upload a clear photo of the rash, I will be better able to help.

There are tests available to specifically diagnose candida like culture, etc. Complete blood count and immunoglobulin levels can help figure out if it is an infection (and which type of infection) or allergy. You may be given topical or oral antifungal medicines. These may not eradicate the organism completely or there may be recurrence after its use.

I would suggest that you consult your physician and take medicine according to his recommendation. An antiallergic medicine may clear up the itching. Drinking cleaner water from reverse osmosis technique may also help.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
