Posted on Thu, 16 Feb 2017
Question: I received a prescription last Friday for pink eye... Gentamicin Sulfate
It requires me to put 3 drops in each eye 3 X a day. I have not missed a dose. My eyes are still red and sore/itchy today 6 days into it. How long should I wait to go back to my doctor?

Brief Answer:
About Returning to the Doctor / Things you Can Do

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Pink Eye can last anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks on average across the board. Let me know if there is improvement. What you can do is prepare your body to be in the healthiest place it can possibly be so as to better fight the infection. This mean nutrients via fruits and vegetables, clean protein and fats (oils/nuts), limited snack based sugars (as bugs love sugar) and most importantly hydration.

I will suggest that if the symptoms worsen and or continue to bother you; call the physician who prescribed you this medication and ask if there are any further medications you can use for alleviation. One last thing; if you wear contacts I highly suggest you stop and do not return to using until your infection has passed (furthermore making sure to clean the contacts, or use new when you do).

I hope this advice has helped.

I DO NOT wear contact lenses, I already eat a healthy diet and I'm plenty hydrated.
Are there other types of eye medications instead of what I'm using???

Brief Answer:
Over the Counter Possibilities

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

I am not aware of your medical history, nor can I see you face to face; so my knowledge of you at this point is limited. I am merely attempting to give you the best answer possible; with what limited information I am given. In regards to hydration and nutrition, I am glad you are doing such things. As stated before I would call the physician to help; as he prescribed you the medications and saw you physically he can best guide treatment.

Nonetheless, I do suggest alternating Warm and Cold compresses (rags or packs) applied carefully to your orbital (eye) region. Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) or cetirizine (Zyrtec), may help relieve your symptoms as well; depending on the cause or whether it is combined with a viral or bacterial source. I would also suggest Ibuprofen to ease some of the inflammation. These are over the counter, and I recommend dosage according to bottle recommendations.

I hope this has helped.

Well, I am AM using Zyrtec and ibuprofen as well. My question was really about an alternative ANTIBIOTIC, not cold/warm compresses or OTC meds.
I'm thinking I am not responding to this particular antibiotic.
I would call my doctor, but I would need to wait all day for a return call. That's how these things work with today's doctors...which is why I paid $$ to join this site and ask you a question and get an immediate answer.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotic like moxifloxacin may be tried.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

I can recommend another antibiotic like moxifloxacin, but to get a prescription for that you would need to visit a doctor anyway. There are plenty; and to say which one is more proper for you would not be proper from my perspective because I do not know your history, allergies, etc. Your physician may do a culture and sensitivity of the secretions and find the correct antibiotic for you.
