What Causes Rapid Heart Beat While Laying Down?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: Today I went for ECG as routine check up. When I laid down I became tense and heart started beating rapidly due to tension, Nurse told me not to be tense but could not control tension. The report got slight variation. My earlier ECG reports were normal. My TMT taken one year back is negative. I do not have any symtoms my breathing is normal while walking or even climbing I am not getting short breath or tired or sweating. Should I take ECG when one is not tense. Whether ECG reads wrongly when one is tense and heart beats fast. Is there cause of concern for mild variation,,

Brief Answer:
Stress do contributes to abnormal ECG's

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir.

I understand your query and concern.

ECG generally has large variations in normal individuals.

These variations get amplified during stress and anxiety giving rise to abnormal values.

Stress can cause elevated heart rates due to activation of body's sympathetic nervous system. This elevated Heart rate forms the basis for abnormal ECG values.

Since your earlier ECG and TMT are negative, you need not be over concerned/worried.

Hence I advice you to strongly you to stay stress free while having an ECG next time.

Thank you.
