What Causes Puffiness Around Fingers?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: Good morning, Doctor. For the last eight months or so, my normally slender fingers in both hands seem to be puffy or retaining water. The area on and around the knuckles look white when I straighten my fingers. I'm 51 y.o. and completed menopause at the end of December, 2014. I'm 5'9 and 138 lbs so I'm not over weight. My hands also get numb at night if I don't wear my wrist braces, but that's been happening for quite a few years. Could the finger swelling/whiteness be the beginning of arthritis? Thank you for any help/guidance you can give me.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing healthcaremagic for posting your query

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

I have gone through your question in detail and understand your concern.

You are having puffiness in your fingers for last 8 months. I need more details about your symptoms like:
Whether this puffiness is only in fingers only or it is also present in toes and feets?
Whether fingers are also painful?
I want to get yourself investigated for heart function test, kidney function test and thyroid function test because these symptoms points more towards a general disease rather than arthritis. So you are advised to visit physician for it. If you have already been tested please upload the reports for me to view.

You are already on analgesic, you can continue with them. For numbness Mecobalamine will be of help.

You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.
Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
Wishing you good health
Take care

My fingers feel a little stiff and tight but not painful. I feel the need to "crack" them. They do get numb and tingle at night. My feet and toes have no issues, no swelling. Thank you for your help!
