What Causes Protrusion In Stomach Muscles While Exercising?

default
Posted on Sat, 18 Jun 2016
Question: Hi, I am concerned about my stomach muscles. The area around my belly button is hard and slightly protrudes. When I try to excercise, my veins/muscles protrude greatly on my left side. I have never experienced this before. It does not hurt, but I feel like the entire abdominal cavity is sensitive...Any thoughts??

Brief Answer:
Hernia- see doctor right away

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Your description of the symptoms indicate a para-umbilical hernia.
This occurs when there is a defect in the abdominal wall and the organs along with their covering is pushed out through that defect.

I would :
- get a detailed medical, personal and family history (any surgeries in the past - especially abdominal, past deliveries, previous hernia, if overweight, for instance)

-do a thorough clinical exam with focus on your abdomen. Check for the size of the defect

-do a CT scan of the abdomen to check for the involved organs.

I believe that the peritoneum (the layer that surrounds most abdominal organs) is being pinched or inflamed.

I recommend that you consult your doctor or another doctor (general surgeon) to check for the above.
If you develop severe pain, vomiting, fever, blood in stools or if the the protrusion enlarges, go to the ER.
In the meantime, avoid exercise, lifting anything heavy or any activity that causes your symptoms. Stick to liquid diet till you see a doctor.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Wish you good health
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
