What Causes Postpartum Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding?

Question: I am 29, having abnormal bleeding since I had an iud put in 6 weeks postpartum. My daughter is 1 1/2 years now. I had attributed my bleeding due to the copper iud. Last month I had the worst bleeding of my life, and sex has become painful. I mentioned it to my doctor who sent me in for transvaginal ultrasound, results say thickened endometrial lining at 18mm. Other than that, no abnormalities. They advised me to repeat the ultrasound next month. Since then, my period came and it was 12 days long and very light in comparison to the usual 8-9 day heavy bleeding I usually have. Sex is getting more painful. I am worried, is there something wrong? What could this be?

2. The IUD appears to have caused endometrial thickening as well as pelvic inflammatory disease.

I was under the impression that pelvic inflammatory disease was caused by an std. I have never any type of std before, and I have been in a faithful marriage for 3 years.
