Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: I recently had a cold and used Zicam Oral Mist. I now have considerable post nasal drip and
have had a lose of taste for all my food for the last week. What is causing this?
I also have a hiatial hernia, which takes longer for me to fight off a cold.
Have had the flu and Pneumonia vacine 2 weeks ago. Never had the
loss of taste before and this has gone on for a week now. No food has any
taste to it. Not sure if I should see a Dr. as both my Dr.s have retired.

Brief Answer:
4 to 6 weeks for complete resolution

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

It is common occurrence to lose sense of taste and smell after a cold. It can take from 4 to 6 weeks before you feel the normal sensations with regards to taste. Nasal decongestants local spray like xynosine and rhinosone helps in bringing back the sense of taste and smell, both at a faster rate. A drop of olive oil can also be instilled in both nostrils to prevent dryness of the nasal mucosa. Consult an ENT specialist if the problem persists beyond 6 weeks to look for atrophic rhinitis and advise accordingly.

Wishing you best of health
